Purpose
I believe we all live for a purpose on this earth. Some people believe that when you have fulfilled your purpose, your life will come to an end. I suppose I can relate this with the patients whom I have seen for the past ten years. I have seen elderly patients eagerly waiting at death bed, embracing the end with full acceptance and peacefulness, and I have seen others who slipped away because they have lost the hope and the will to live. In my opinion, as long as you possess the purpose to live, you will continue to exist in this world no matter what. How else can you explain that a paralyzed man who has been bed bound for two years could turn his life around and led a good productive and independent life for 20 years? Or can you imagine a 95 years old man who can no longer walk on his feet because both of his knees are completely non-functional due to severe osteoporosis but he still can mobilize by crawling on four limbs? What is your purpose in this life? What do you hope to achieve? What have you contributed to this world? What changes would you make to make your life more meaningful and purposeful?
Or have you given up your goals? Are you at your wits' end? Is there no hope left for you?
These are the thoughts I ponder from time to time, especially after a long day at work when too many things are thrown at me unarmed and undefended. Every time I am at the brink of being overwhelmed, I take a timeout and remind myself how lucky I am to be needed for a purpose despite the hardship. What will happen if one day I were to lose the ability to walk again? Or if I were to be inflicted with a terminal illness and only have months to live? Will I then lose the purpose?
